Is Massage Therapy at Deep Relief Covered by Insurance in Austin?

Paying out of pocket for every therapeutic session adds up fast. Before booking, most clients want to know whether their insurance will offset any of the cost. At Deep Relief, a provider of full-service massage in Austin, TX, the answer depends on your plan, but our dedicated massage specialists accept more coverage types than most wellness clinics in the area.

We are in-network with Blue Cross Blue Shield and accept OWCP federal workers’ compensation for massage therapy and acupuncture. For clients whose plans fall outside those categories, we provide a superbill on request so you can pursue out-of-network reimbursement directly through your insurer.

Here is a plain breakdown of what coverage looks like at our Oak Hill clinic.

Does Health Insurance Typically Cover Massage Therapy?

Health insurance coverage for massage therapy varies significantly by plan, provider, and the clinical reason for the treatment. Most standard health plans do not cover massage as a general wellness or relaxation service. Coverage becomes more likely when massage is part of a medically necessary treatment plan, such as chronic pain management, post-surgical recovery, or musculoskeletal rehabilitation.

The clinical nature of our sessions matters here. Our DR Hit The Spot™ method is a trademarked therapeutic protocol, not a spa service. Sessions are condition-focused, targeting the specific muscle groups and pain referral patterns responsible for a client’s symptoms. That clinical positioning strengthens the case for insurance consideration compared to a standard relaxation massage at a chain clinic.

What Insurance Does Deep Relief Accept?

We accept two types of insurance coverage at our Austin location. Clients covered under either of these can use their benefits directly at our Oak Hill clinic without going through a separate reimbursement process.

Blue Cross Blue Shield: We are in-network with Blue Cross Blue Shield for acupuncture and chiropractic care. Clients with an active BCBS plan can use their in-network benefits for those services without filing an out-of-network claim. Full details are available on our insurance coverage page.

OWCP Federal Workers’ Compensation: We accept U.S. Department of Labor OWCP benefits for both massage therapy and acupuncture. Federal employees with an approved workers’ compensation claim can receive covered care at our clinic. You can find full details on our federal workers’ compensation page.

For all other plans, a superbill is available at checkout upon request. This gives you the documentation needed to file for potential reimbursement through your own insurer.

Does Blue Cross Blue Shield Cover Massage Therapy at Deep Relief?

BCBS coverage at our clinic applies to acupuncture and chiropractic services. Massage therapy under BCBS depends on the specific plan you hold and whether your treatment is medically prescribed.

Some BCBS plans do include therapeutic massage when ordered by a physician or tied to an injury claim. We recommend calling the member services number on your insurance card and asking specifically whether your plan covers therapeutic massage with a referral. If it does, we can provide the clinical documentation needed to support that claim.

Our team is available to talk you through what to ask your insurer before your first appointment, so you arrive with clear expectations.

Can Federal Employees Use Workers’ Comp for Massage in Austin?

Yes. We accept OWCP federal workers’ compensation benefits for massage therapy and acupuncture at our Oak Hill clinic. This is not standard practice among Austin massage providers, most of whom operate as self-pay only.

Federal employees who have sustained a work-related injury and have an approved OWCP claim can receive covered sessions at our clinic. The claims process is handled through the standard OWCP framework, and our team is familiar with the documentation requirements.

What If My Insurance Is Not Accepted?

If your plan is not one we accept in-network, a superbill gives you the next best option. It is a structured receipt that includes the service codes, clinical detail, and provider information your insurer needs to evaluate a reimbursement request. We provide superbills on request, and many clients with PPO plans have successfully received partial reimbursement through this process.

If reimbursement is not available under your plan, the most practical way to manage the cost of consistent care is through our DR Wellness Plan membership. At $100 per month, it covers one 50-minute session and reduces every additional session by $30. Credits roll over for 90 days if unused.

New clients also receive $30 off their first visit, regardless of membership status.

How Do I Verify My Coverage Before Booking?

The fastest way to confirm coverage is through our online insurance verification tool. You will need your insurance card and basic plan information ready. The process takes only a few minutes and shows you what your plan covers at our clinic.

If you have questions about what the result means or how to proceed, our team can walk you through the next steps before your first appointment. We would rather spend a few minutes clarifying coverage upfront than leave a client uncertain about what to expect at checkout.

Is the DR Wellness Plan Worth It If Insurance Does Not Cover My Sessions?

For clients without applicable insurance, the DR Wellness Plan brings the cost of regular therapeutic care down to a manageable level. One 50-minute session per month is included at $100, and every additional session beyond that is reduced by $30.

This matters clinically as well as financially. Our DR Hit The Spot™ protocol is designed to produce cumulative benefit. A client managing chronic neck tension or recurring sports injury will not see lasting results from a single session every few months. Consistent care is what produces durable improvement, and the membership structure is what makes that consistency accessible.
