Standard massage positioning places the client face down, which becomes unsafe and uncomfortable during pregnancy past the first trimester. Prenatal massage requires modified positioning using supportive bolsters and pillows that accommodate the changing body without applying pressure to the abdomen.

Therapists at Deep Relief are trained in both face-down prenatal support positioning using a specialized system that allows safe prone placement, and side-lying positioning used in later stages or for clients who are more comfortable in that orientation. Techniques are also modified since certain areas, including the ankles and lower calves, are avoided due to pressure points that are contraindicated during pregnancy.

The primary focus areas typically include the lower back and hips, where the gluteals, piriformis, and lumbar muscles experience the greatest increase in demand. The upper back and shoulders are addressed through the neck and back zones. For clients experiencing leg swelling, gentle effleurage and lymphatic drainage techniques encourage fluid movement and reduce the heaviness that builds throughout the day. The Perfect Pressure Number System is used throughout every prenatal session so clients maintain direct control over intensity at all times.

 

When Prenatal Massage Is Safe to Start

Prenatal massage is generally safe from the second trimester onward. The first trimester carries a higher rate of natural pregnancy loss for reasons unrelated to massage, so most practitioners and clinical guidelines recommend waiting until week 13 before beginning sessions.

Clients with high-risk pregnancies, preeclampsia, placenta previa, a history of preterm labor, or other complications should consult their OB or midwife before scheduling. The team asks about these conditions during intake and will refer clients back to their care provider if there is any clinical reason to delay.

How Often to Schedule Prenatal Massage

For general comfort and discomfort management, once or twice a month from the second trimester onward is typical for most clients. For specific pain conditions like sciatica or lower back pain, tapering every one to two weeks during the period when symptoms are most active, then moving to monthly maintenance as symptoms improve, tends to produce the best outcomes. For clients whose sciatica has a movement restriction component, orthopedic massage may also be incorporated into a prenatal care plan.

For sleep disruption, swelling, and general tension, monthly sessions are usually sufficient. If symptoms change significantly between visits, scheduling an additional session sooner is more effective than waiting for the next scheduled appointment.

 

Insurance and Membership

Deep Relief is in-network with SANA, Curative, and BS&W (Baylor Scott & White). SANA covers massage in all its plans. OWCP Federal Workers’ Compensation is also accepted for eligible federal employees. Out-of-network clients pay standard rates upfront; the insurer is billed directly, and reimbursement is issued upon payment. Superbills are available upon request.

The DR Wellness Plan is $100 per month and includes one 50-minute session, including prenatal massage. Credits roll over for 90 days, members receive $30 off every additional session, 10% off retail products, and complimentary add-ons. The plan runs month-to-month after an initial 3-month agreement.
